Waipak: Producing and Educating for Sustainability

Waipak NZ Ltd have been producing a wide range of injection and blow moulded products such as bottles, food packaging, caps & closures plus many other plastic packaging solutions since May 2017. But, we’re not just producing, we’re on a mission to flip common misconceptions of plastic or ‘urban junk’ on their head, passionately advocating for plastic to be seen as a renewable resource, if it simply enters the accepted end of life systems.

The Team at Waipak are thriving on the challenges other manufactures are turning away from, not by reinventing the wheel or introducing new and overwhelming waste disposal methods but by keeping end consumers, brand owners and the environment at front of mind.

We’re keeping things simple. We’re designing and producing products for recyclability, and responding to existing waste disposal systems and issues in Aotearoa to set common household plastics on a different lifecycle. With increasing pressure from the public surrounding plastic pollution matters, the tide is beginning to turn and we are seeing an increasing demand in the market and people’s minds for plastic initiatives.

Unlike traditional linear manufacturing models (make, use, dispose of) Waipak operates on a closed-loop system, in which resources are kept in use for as long as possible. before being recovered at the end of their ‘first life’, creating a make, use, return system instead.

Having found many creative uses for scrap PET (#1), HDPE (#2) and PP (#5) – The common New Zealand household recycled plastics, the Waipak Team are pleased to share that we process approximately 40 tonnes of recycled plastics per month! There are many plans in motion to expand this capability to meet increasing public demand and make way for more recycled construction products such as the Castle NZ PET (#1) Bar Chairs and PP (#5) QPOD flooring for concrete construction. We are also pleased to share that almost any product that we make can be made from 100% recycled plastic!

Alongside our innovation in the plastic manufacturing space, in 2020 we grew our Team to include a Sustainability role to show our commitment to supporting and educating our customers and their customers. We have learnt that there are many gaps in the the process between what the environment needs, what we are capable of achieving with current infrastructure and what brand owners and end consumers actually know. Because of this our leadership is the waste/plastic resource education space has quickly grown (check out our informative videos here) and we now endeavor to be a contactable business offering support, information and education to all.

In saying all of this, the Waipak Team are committed to being transparent with our challenges and that we may not always get it right. We acknowledge the fast moving industry we exist in and the different priorities at stake. We are eager to continue to learn, develop and grow and know that achieving a healthier planet comes with enormous collaboration and so, we remain open to advice, guidance and better ways.
